Mebored

Well I am just grumpy about this. I don't like instant messaging. I can see cases where it would be useful. Years ago I tried using it with my daughter who was away at college. I thought it would save on phone bills and keep us in touch. Instead I ended up in 3 way conversations with her friends--while she was busy chatting with yet another person.

Here at work we have Exodus but it rarely gets used. If you know someone is at her desk--well I would just rather pick up the phone and call. It's faster and there are all those subliminal signals that come out in a voiced conversation. However if you are at a meeting with your laptop--and you want to talk to someone--hmmm--that might be useful.

It was also very confusing figuring out where to insert the Meebo sidebar. The original instructions were very confusing. Only when I read further did I figure it out.

My neck hurts!

I get really busy running the library--and then when I get caught up--I try to work on Discover 2.0. Today was the session on more RSS feeds. Once again I spent way too much time just finding where I am---trying to remember what I last learned--and then wandering around on the Internet--looking for more RSS feeds. I looked at all the links Topix.net, Syndic8.com. I get really overwhelmed at all the information, news etc. When I am using the internet on my own--I just like to run in, grab the information I want and get out--kind of like rescuing someone in a fire. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to add to my RSS feed--finally I settled on Annoyed Librarian
(Hmm--maybe because I am feeling a little annoyed), http://annoyedlibrarian.blogspot.com/.
And then just for fun--because I like games---I found one on gaming: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues.

And now my neck hurts as I have peered too long at the computer screen through the lower half of my bifocals.

RSS addict

This can be dangerous--very dangerous. I already knew a little bit about RSS--was planning to set something up with my home email address but had never gotten around to it. And then today I went to bloglines and came up for air about an hour later (and I had to be on desk). So I quickly found sites that I wanted to RSS. It was more difficult to learn what other 2.0 Discoverers had selected--in fact that's what took so long. A lot of people didn't actually add their sites to their post. Nevertheless it was fun to wander through peoples' posts and see what people are doing and what triggers their interests. For those a little farther back on the path--who are looking for an RSS feed to add--here's my favorite (one I discovered on my own): icanhazcheezburger.com.
If you're having a bad day--just look at these silly pictures and you will be laughing out loud--literally--really--it's kind of embarrassing.

flickr tools

I explored many of the flickr tools. Interesting, but perhaps I am not imaginative enough, I couldn't think of ways to use many of the tools. The trading card one was perhaps the most interesting one. I liked the ability to spell in different images. I might use that one!

My friend flickr

I've been looking at Flickr--did the tour. It's fascinating to see everyone's photos, but I don't see this as a website I would use that much--except perhaps to search for an image. I would never post my photos on this site, but I do use Snapfish--so my friends can see my pictures.

Anyway here is the picture I selected. It was taken in Karuizawa Japan--my birthplace. I've never been back but I hear that it's a beautiful place.

first day out

Okay I have listened to the boring presentation on being a lifelong learner. Made notes. I would say that I am a person who is not afraid of technology--find it interesting--but get frustrated when it doesn't work right away for me--like creating this blog. Tried several times yesterday--it would not let me register. Two other employees who are already doing Discover 2.0 tried to help. We couldn't figure it out. Then Ryan helped me this morning--and it's working just fine. So first day out and here I am.
