Technorati

This is another one of those sites that overwhelms me. I am not interested in following blogs--even blogs of my friends---I try to read them--but I forget.

And I tried to search for Learning 2.0 under keyword (516 hits--and no I didn't go through all of them). Under tags there were 737 hits--and I didn't read those either!

MMM delicious

So this was quick and easy because I already knew about del.icio.us. Learned about it last spring--had it set up and already have stuff on there. I do like it and I need to remember to use it more. I especially like the fact that I can log in anywhere and see my tagged websites.

Sometimes life is too busy for fun and games

Haven't had time to work on Discover 2.0 in over 2 months. Today there was a bit of a breather so I thought I would do the next step. It was the one on playing around with images. I did all the steps. It was amusing, and I can see the value but it felt too much like playing during a busy work day.

I have been wanting to explore the idea of doing a writing workshop with teens--and using websites to create journals. Someone told me that Creative Memories does such a thing. It would be cool to have teens tell their stories--use websites to download pictures, manipulate pictures to illustrate their writing. So I will remember all these things and maybe someday I will be using it.

Here is my fortune cookie picture--just for fun.

Resistance is futile

All right. I did it. I signed up for Facebook. I decided to do Facebook because it seems a little safer to me. I liked the idea of networks. I figured the friend I asked to join would be a work friend. But when my network popped up one of the first people I saw is my oldest and best friend. I was surprised because she isn't someone who I would think would be on Facebook. We already email each other but this is kind of fun to have her zipping me short little emails. And then I asked my kids to befriend me. Marisa, the older daughter, has responded--has sent me several emails that make me laugh out loud--and she insisted I put up a picture. It's fun because even though she lives 10 minutes away from me---this gives us another opportunity to communicate.

Now if the other one would befriend me. . .I don't expect it because she is working hard to establish herself as a grown up and separate from her life from ours. She just doesn't want me to know how much she parties. . .

Here is my facebook connnection; http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269996551.

Social networking wallflower

I have really mixed feelings about this. I know just enough about My Space and Facebook to feel like the nerdy underdeveloped 7th grader who wasn't allowed to listen to rock n' roll. I know about My Space and Facebook because I have 2 twentysomething daughters for whom these sites are extremely popular--and as they say addictive. I also know that they don't me looking at their sites. But I have---because a friend's daughter lets me look at their sites through hers. And it feels like spying--and I have only done it a couple of times.

Enough about that---even after all reading I just did on social networking--I still feel a vague apprehension. It feels overwhelming. However like the first time I used the Internet over 10 years ago and couldn't see the value in it---I am sure my mind will be changed on this also.
And hey--I may have been the wallflower in 7th grade, but I did know all the Beatles names.

Mebored

Well I am just grumpy about this. I don't like instant messaging. I can see cases where it would be useful. Years ago I tried using it with my daughter who was away at college. I thought it would save on phone bills and keep us in touch. Instead I ended up in 3 way conversations with her friends--while she was busy chatting with yet another person.

Here at work we have Exodus but it rarely gets used. If you know someone is at her desk--well I would just rather pick up the phone and call. It's faster and there are all those subliminal signals that come out in a voiced conversation. However if you are at a meeting with your laptop--and you want to talk to someone--hmmm--that might be useful.

It was also very confusing figuring out where to insert the Meebo sidebar. The original instructions were very confusing. Only when I read further did I figure it out.

My neck hurts!

I get really busy running the library--and then when I get caught up--I try to work on Discover 2.0. Today was the session on more RSS feeds. Once again I spent way too much time just finding where I am---trying to remember what I last learned--and then wandering around on the Internet--looking for more RSS feeds. I looked at all the links Topix.net, Syndic8.com. I get really overwhelmed at all the information, news etc. When I am using the internet on my own--I just like to run in, grab the information I want and get out--kind of like rescuing someone in a fire. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to add to my RSS feed--finally I settled on Annoyed Librarian
(Hmm--maybe because I am feeling a little annoyed), http://annoyedlibrarian.blogspot.com/.
And then just for fun--because I like games---I found one on gaming: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues.

And now my neck hurts as I have peered too long at the computer screen through the lower half of my bifocals.

RSS addict

This can be dangerous--very dangerous. I already knew a little bit about RSS--was planning to set something up with my home email address but had never gotten around to it. And then today I went to bloglines and came up for air about an hour later (and I had to be on desk). So I quickly found sites that I wanted to RSS. It was more difficult to learn what other 2.0 Discoverers had selected--in fact that's what took so long. A lot of people didn't actually add their sites to their post. Nevertheless it was fun to wander through peoples' posts and see what people are doing and what triggers their interests. For those a little farther back on the path--who are looking for an RSS feed to add--here's my favorite (one I discovered on my own): icanhazcheezburger.com.
If you're having a bad day--just look at these silly pictures and you will be laughing out loud--literally--really--it's kind of embarrassing.

flickr tools

I explored many of the flickr tools. Interesting, but perhaps I am not imaginative enough, I couldn't think of ways to use many of the tools. The trading card one was perhaps the most interesting one. I liked the ability to spell in different images. I might use that one!

My friend flickr

I've been looking at Flickr--did the tour. It's fascinating to see everyone's photos, but I don't see this as a website I would use that much--except perhaps to search for an image. I would never post my photos on this site, but I do use Snapfish--so my friends can see my pictures.

Anyway here is the picture I selected. It was taken in Karuizawa Japan--my birthplace. I've never been back but I hear that it's a beautiful place.

first day out

Okay I have listened to the boring presentation on being a lifelong learner. Made notes. I would say that I am a person who is not afraid of technology--find it interesting--but get frustrated when it doesn't work right away for me--like creating this blog. Tried several times yesterday--it would not let me register. Two other employees who are already doing Discover 2.0 tried to help. We couldn't figure it out. Then Ryan helped me this morning--and it's working just fine. So first day out and here I am.
